Roman Londinium: Uncover the Origins of the City of London

To quote Monty Python:

‘What have the Romans ever done for us?’ By the end of this walk with me you will have the answer to these questions plus much more!

Julius Caesar came, saw, but he definitely did not conquer -  He lasted 21 days - hated the weather, was not a good sailor and went home, leaving Brittania unconquered for nearly 100 years until Emperor Claudius came over in AD 43.

Come on this walk with me and learn what life in Roman London was like - how it started and why it suddenly ended in 410 AD with a letter from Emperor Honorius saying “fight bravely and defend your lives … you are on your own now’ - this goodbye letter is seen as the end of Roman Rule in Britain.

The Square Mile as the City of London is also known is defined by the shape of the wall that the Romans built around the City and still sits on its foundations today.

Roman pavement is between 6 and 7 meters below where we stand today. On this walk we will see part of the Roman Wall, hear about the bathhouses - we even know what Ceasar smelt like from the oil he used as perfume. Why did Roman concrete defy pickaxes and shovels?   Learn of the secret to its durability.Hear about the reasons why the Romans soon made Londinium the capital of the Province and why they settled here.We will go to the London Mithreum which was discovered during the clearing of rubble from the Blitz, we will hear of the excavation of the Roman equivalent of Oxford Street as the Museum of London’s Archeologists called it, the Fort that was built temporarily after the Boudican fire of 60 AD, The site of the Roman Forum and Basilica, The Bloomberg writing tablets and the Roman Amphitheatre which was only discovered in the late 1980’s when the new Guildhall Art gallery was being built.

The walk will last approximately two hours.
